another birthday

Mine today. Kari and I share. It was great.

Jay made lasagna last night for the party tonight. This was Kari's request and an excellent choice. He did a great job.

I'd baked the cake earlier, and unfortunately the cake had issues. It tore when I frosted it and things were spiraling downhill, so we threw it in the freezer to halt the descent. Successful? Not sure. It tasted good, even if it looked weird.

But this morning Jay drove James to band so I could sleep. He whispered it in my ear. This was maybe the nicest gift ever. I was so tired by last night I could hardly stand it, and he did this without my even asking. Gawd, no wonder I love him.

Mid-morning, I woke up in a pile of pillows in the sun. We had a few errands to do, then back home for the party.

It was so sunny and warm today, Jay and the kids cleaned off the patio. James searched the garage for the umbrella for the picnic table, and Jay put together this swing--my birthday and mother's day gift. Our other one was shot, must be fifteen years old. This one is pretty delightful, soft cushions, big canopy.

The kids wanted to know what a canopy is? "A can of pee?" Noooo. Observe and learn.

Not a can of pee, thanks.

The usual characters were here, and it was was very loud, but also fun.

the look on my face is me considering how to keep this breakable lantern Kirsten gave me safe from the squirrels.

Kari's 11 in 2011, and this is my last year in my forties. I'm looking forward to seeing what the year brings. Thanks for being birthday buddies, Lydia. love you so, Mom

who's eleven?

It's Lydia's birthday.

She used to be about the nuttiest squirrel in the house.

Not anymore.

Since she turned ten last year she's become extremely civilized.

She never hypes out, smarts off, or causes trouble.

She's good-natured, responsible, and calm.

I mean, we knew this would happen eventually, but already???

When she was born, we named her Lydia Karina. We named her after Jay's grandma--my mother in law's mom.

And then we nicknamed her Kari because Lydia's an old name, and it seemed like it'd be useful to also have a kid name since she was a kid.

But Grandma names are in style now, though I didn't realize it at the time. So she goes by both, interchangeably. A friend's daughter who seldom sees us all together was confused. She thought Lydia and Kari were two different people.

Nope. Same. All at once it made sense.

Here's a picture of the grandparents, John and Lydia, with Dan tucked between them. I love these two so much--looking at the picture, I can almost reach out and touch them, including little Dan.

It's been over twenty-five years since this picture was taken, and gosh we still miss them.

But love doesn't ever end.

Here are some pictures for fun.

Lydia, darling, you are truly lovely. From the days when you were a small lump and spent your evenings crossly bleating in my ear, "baaa, baaa," to the funny, quirky kid you were, to the graceful girl you are now, we are nothing but lucky having you.

Obviously this whole family is way better because you're in it. Happy, happy birthday. love you always, Mom and Dad

tuesday, tuesday, tuesday

sid the science guy does this to him. mesmerized.

It was great.

We had this man here. He's a lot of fun, dumped out the dog's water only once, and he did his swiffering and helped me vacuum. He holds onto the vacuum and stands between my legs and yells while we go. It adds a little excitement to the job.

His dog used to tear the swiffer sheets right off the swiffer while I was working too. There's a connection there.

When he finally agreed to rest, it was 4:00, too late for a nap, but he fell sound asleep in my arms, little mouth hanging open, hair damp. I nuzzled his hair, and his breath smelled like milk.

This is the yipping mechanical dog he likes. It goes, "Yap, yap, yap, yap, yap, yap, yap, yap," and then it's quiet while the legs walk, then repeat. Pretty annyoing, but also funny in a strange way.

A couple months ago I showed it to him and then put my pinky in the dog's mouth during the yap-yap cycle. He looked very curious and also skeptical. Did he put his own finger in there? Noooo. He's smart. He put in a pencil. Awww, thinkin'. That cracked me up.

When l.c. was here last, he was playing with the dog, and we got tired of the yapping and suggested the puppy was tired and should sleep. He set it on its yapping little side and said, "Good night." We laughed, no we meant OFF.

You babies.

This girl was here today too, and she's smiling now, personality emerging in every direction. Her crying has changed from newborn crying to true communication. She's got an angry tone, a frustrated voice, a tired one, a voice where she tells a bad story.

That's what we were listening to here while her diaper was changed--a bad story about how first she ate too much, and then had a tummy ache, and now THIS.

But things were better shortly.

Julia said her diaper smelled like Dr. Pepper. Hunh?

The kids are still cracking up from spring fever. The curtains on the family windows over the stairway were messed up. Standing on the landing looking up, the BOTTOM of that window sill is probably eight feet up.

see the window in the background? it's on the left. and the light fixture?

Who can reach those curtains? There's an antique light fixture in front of them, dangling, as light fixtures will do.

Tell me about the curtains. There was some foot shuffling and nervous looks. Julia made him do it. He did it trying to save her.

I yelled a little, "Just tell me what you did to these curtains!" Were they waving a broom by the light fixture? Shot them with nerf arrows? WHAT?

Well, Julia went out with her toes on the OUTSIDE of the railing over the stairway, and crept along and then walked over the bookshelf below and messed up the curtains.

Good God.

She tried this once a couple years ago, going up the stairs too and if she'd fallen would have landed an entire flight of stairs (15 steps high) straight down. That time they yelled for help, Kari and Tim holding onto her arms while she perched there, toes between the rails, on a three inch ledge.

I was terribly startled and grabbed her by her skinny little arms and yanked her right over. Scared the crap out of me. I ranted and raved and it's never happened again.

Until now.

Sigh. I ranted a bit: blah, blah, safety, dumb ideas, wrecking the house, the usual. They nodded. I don't know what else to do? They're already grounded.

After supper, Tim appealed pretty desperately to go outside. He can't see any mud. Well, if you start running around on that dead lawn, it'll all be mud, but we said, sure on the patio. ONLY the patio and sandbox, not the grass.

They were standing on the back step and we overheard Tim in the cold air, no coat on, not even shoes, "Julia, it feels so good outside."

The neighbor's granddaughter asked her, "Grandma, do you think we're going to have summer this year?"

This has been an endless winter, but now it's April. We're going to make it yet.

James got a little step ladder and fixed the curtains. Speaking of him, we did a little dance in the kitchen doorway tonight and I realized he's taller than his dad. They stood back to back, and yes, he is. He's got to be 6'3".

Jay said, "I'm looking up at your eyes, Jimmy. But I'll always have my girth."

Oh my goodness.

Love you, Buddy, girth and all. love, V

friday night

A few pictures from Little Jay's birthday party on Friday night:

Tim's showing t.c. how to gel his hair.

The results:

l.c. whispered a song to his new cousin. Why are so many pictures blurry? That's not the song--I just get tired of cute, blurry pictures. He sang her Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. She liked it.

Maria hugging that baby.

Ta da! All six candles definitively blown out. Sorry about that, Honey. (I forgot to buy candles. He laughed.)

Anyway, Happy Birthday Jay. We hope this will be a really great year. love forever and ever, Mom and Dad

you

I got a couple kids here chattering away to me now, disrupting my train of thought. But what they’re chattering about? They have a 3-D trading card of a tiger. First the face, then tilt it and it looks like the tiger leaping toward you.

I’m accumulating items to put in a care package for you at college. The kids wanted to eat the jelly beans—but I told them no. They’re for your care package. When they’re in college, I’ll send packages to them, but Jay’s working hard, studying a lot. He needs to know we are thinking about him.

They want to put the tiger thing in the care package for you. Sigh.

Thanks for being the kind of man kids can look up to. Honestly, I wouldn't be who I am without you either.

You hit this family like some kind of crazy explosion and there's not one thing about you I'd change.

Happy Birthday You. Nineteen years of you. Lucky, lucky us. love, Mom

ps. Six packages of potato sausage are ready, and a big fat cake is baked. See you later.
