there's an upstairs? woo hoo!

b.g. has never been upstairs before Maria took him up there today.

He LOVED it up there. His eyes were huge, darting around at all the stuff to get into. I gotta get dooooowwwn!

Let me at this Barbie house! I love this house!

Oh yeah, he's going to be a lot of help with the decorating. Here he's just dumped the two babies out of the crib.

We had this going on up on the roof:

Later he slept for a couple hours on the couch.

Before lunch I came around the corner too fast and saw this on the floor. I winced back and did a little tiny scream. Good grief, it's a dog toy, but eeew. Then I laughed my head off and showed Maria. Sheeze, this house. Looking at the photo now kind of grosses me out again.

Oh yes, may all your dead rodents in the living room be nothing but fake. love,Val

oh dear

Oh dear. I have a real estate deal crumbling around the edges, so frustrating and upsetting.

The outcome is unknown at this time.

And our accounts receivable continues to climb, as does our own pile of bills, which will eventually be due.

Nobody's paying.

Oh, ouch, ouch, ouch.

So I've defaulted into stress mode and am cleaning the kids' room. It needs it badly. There are so many remote control vehicles without remotes. Remotes without vehicles. All without batteries.

It makes my head hurt. And where do all these Yu Gi Oh cards come from???? A GI Joe with no feet? Oh my goodness. I know this is not what's really stressing me out, even though it makes my head swim. Why is the jewelry in a baggie? How about the jewelry box? And why are there 15 crumpled dollar bills in the video game bag? Where are the Game Boy games, actually?

All this kid clutter is another form of the rest of what I can't control.

Jay called on the phone and said, "Do you know how much I love you?"

Yes.

Julia is trying on her shoes, weeding out what doesn't fit. She was in here a minute ago to show me a pair and spontaneously threw her arms around my neck and kissed me.

Tomorrow will be a day of baby ears to nibble, and crazy baby stunts to supervise. Tuesday when he was here, we walked around the garden late in the afternoon, him in the pouch. He squinted in the sun and his white hair blew in the breeze, and he's so completely lovely it almost hurts.

Onward. The mailman will be here again tomorrow, maybe with money. In the meantime, hug the people you love, and sort your sock drawers, and keep laughing. love, Val

a sweet birthday

Last night t.c. slept over, in celebration of Tim's birthday. We had a quiet night last night, and a very fun day today--lots of legos, a lot of fun.

I took them grocery shopping this afternoon to get a few things for supper. The store has these horrible little carts that say, "Shopper in Training." Unh. I must have been hit in the ankles at least ten times.

Even though I thought really bad language, I never said it out loud, make that known. Maria said my face said it all though, as I leaned on the shelves, clutching my ankles while they apologized. "You goldarn kids. Watch where you're going!"

But whatever. It was a mere 45 minutes of my life and it's over.

Tonight we had a sweet little party for a really sweet kid.

an august weekend

We were at the lake this weekend, all of us.

As the week went by and the teenagers around here discussed inviting friends, I had the realization that the big brothers and sisters, brothers and sisters in law, grandsons, nephews... were all going to be there.

Friends would be welcome, but we would have nowhere for them to sleep.

So in the end, it was just us, and that's rare.

Tim's eighth birthday is tomorrow. For a couple reasons, the timing--but mostly the PERSON HE IS--the day he was born is one of the very best of my life.

see how he's bundled up in a sweater and blankets? that's life for a baby in an old house in this climate--layers, sweaters, moccasins

He's an extremely cool person.

He also smiled at four days.

Dan was living with John in an apartment near the university, but he was home that afternoon. Storms were approaching so it was dark in the living room. I was tired and blurry and glad for Dan's company.

Dan cradled Tim on his forearms and called him T-Dawg and talked to him.

Tim was still, listening intently to his crooning voice, and then smiled--a big baby grin, ear to ear.

Dan quipped, "At least ONE brother knows I'm funny."

Yeah, it's true. You are, and Tim knew it.

Okay, this is a classic Tim story:

One morning I had to wake him up early, and that doesn't usually happen. I rubbed his back as he woke up.

He sat up and said, in his Timothy deep voice, with the extra round vowels, "I had the most boringest dream I ever had in my whole entire life." (His whole entire life--yes, all six years.)

I said, "Yeah?"

He said, "I dreamed I was a nail."

(a nail?)

I said, "That's pretty boring. What were you doing? Holding things together? Getting pounded on the head?"

"Nope. Just layin' in a box."

Okay that's the most boring-est dream I have ever heard. You are right. I fell over on the bed next to him, laughing.

Tim? I love you. This whole family could not be who it is without you.

YOU.

Lucky, lucky us. love, Mom

come on, cool air

Today we had little b.g. and he had a fever, so it was a quiet day. He and I slept on the couch for a couple hours this morning--did that ever feel good.

And it's so sweet to wake up next to a baby who is happy to see you. I'm as brown as an old witch after all the afternoons in the beating sun at the little pool, and this heat does something terrible to my hair. No matter what I do with it, in an hour I look like Phyllis Diller again. Sigh. b.g. doesn't care. He reached for my face, gave kissy cuddles.

He grinned and talked for a long time before the other kids woke up and found him to come and play.

Later he was feverish again and spent time in the pouch. Usually he doesn't want to be carried around that much. He's got stuff to do. But today he did, and this is the thing--I have to watch him because every now and then he sets his sharp little teeth into my shoulder. Owww! Don't bite me! He smiles. I don't really care. It's not like he's drawing blood.

In the afternoon, he took another long nap on the couch in the family room, arms over his head, the fan softly blowing from across the room. I have a port-a-crib, and his parents have provided us with a pack-and-play, and yet he sleeps so well on the couch, even with the TV on and people around. Plus it's so easy to keep an eye on him there. It seems like noises (okay, SIDNEY BARKING) don't wake him up there either. I know it's not correct though. I mean, the couch? It just seems wrong.

that flowered pillow is jay's. he always seems to end up with his grandpa's pillow

My mom took Tim birthday shopping today. (Okay, this is like the best day of Tim's whole year. He was so excited.) When I told Tim about this, Little Jay thought I was talking to him. "Grandma's coming to take me shopping? What for?" But the way his face lit up made me laugh. I told him I was talking to Tim and he said, "I wondered! She gave me money for school, and now she's taking me on some mysterious shopping trip too?"

I teased him, "But you liked the idea, didn't you?"

"Yeah, I know! I did."

Oh my mother, she dotes on them.

tim and t.c. at the little pool yesterday

So know we've got two friends sleeping over, and another one here for the evening. And Heidi's dog turned up here to be babysat. Jay's working late, and I'm going to go make some dip and some sandwiches, feed these people supper. It's still terribly hot and sticky, but storms are on their way, whew. love, Val

a sauna day

a cooling photo

It's very hot here, just absolutely sultry.

Now the storms have started so I have Sidney alternating between hiding under my chair, and hiding under the bed skirt, plus Sam nervously pacing and panting.

Oy.

Tim and Julia don't want to go to bed while it's thundering out, and that's fine. We can wait a bit. Maybe I'll make some ice cream cones in a minute.

We went to the little pool today, met b.g.'s other grandma. She's one of those people who is never too busy for us. They live across the street from the little pool, and she had the afternoon off today. When we showed up, she slapped the lid on her paint can, shoved the brush in a plastic bag and ran to put her bathing suit on and join us. I love that about her.

It was so bright at that pool, it hurt our eyes, but the water felt good.

Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter and just as tropical. Everyone's skin and hair are smooth and silky, no lotion necessary--the humidity agrees with our skin. I wish we could bottle a bit of this for next January, the sunshine and balmy days. Wouldn't that be awesome? Sleep tight. love, Val

a saturday up north

Yesterday we went to visit Jay's parents. They used to live not far from here, but when they retired, they moved up north to their lake place, turned it from a little northwoods cabin into a home.

jay's dad up on his perch...porch

Jay's brother and his family were there, and John and Dannell, t.c. and l.c.

l.c. and our nephew

Jay's brother has all the lake toys, the jet ski, the big, fast boat, and he shares them all. It's awfully nice.

After Jay had given all the kids numerous rides on the jet ski, he coaxed me for a ride, "Sit in front--you won't even get wet."

We headed across the lake and along the shoreline past the bays, down to the end where the lake is wild with reeds and cat tails, turns to a bog. There aren't cabins on that end, just eagles and loons. His arms were warm over mine, and his voice was in my ear.

As we flew over glossy water the color of bottle glass, memories of when we were teenagers at this lake came gushing forward as images, no words. I could picture all of us in the sink hole, chasing each other in boats, long brown arms and legs, all of us shoving each other on the diving dock. I pictured my mother in law driving the boat, and her parents along with us, trolling for notherns. I could hear her mother's happy cheer when someone had a bite.

When we headed toward the access, I remembered the day our dog threw up in my lap, carsick, when we were almost there. He stopped and I jumped out with Tammy, and ran down the landing into the water to rinse the puke off my jeans. All at once, there Jay was leaning over out the passenger door hollering, "The drop off! Val! THE DROP OFF!"

Oh dear, yes that, forgot about that. I stopped before we went too far, and the dog and I walked the rest of the way to his parents.

Anyway, it was a lovely day. They pulled kids on water skis and tubes.

our daring little nephews

Our niece and some girls next door had put together a little carnival. I guess they worked on it all week, and it was really fun. The kids loved it.

My grandbabies were there too, and that was pretty fun. It's not very often I spend time alone with l.c. but yesterday we did get some time. I sang him You Are My Sunshine while his dad was fetching the diaper wipes and he grinned at me as if thinking, "You weird lady."

While John cooked, I amused him on the deck. We didn't have a lot of toys, but we did have a little cardboard box. I pretended something amazing was inside, and then crept it over to him to show him. He's smart. He got the game, looked in the empty box and pretended to be amazed too. I found a spoon and stirred in the box and pretended to eat. He did the same thing, even offered me a bite of imaginary food.
So sweet.

Then it was finally time to leave. We hated to go, but it's a long drive back home. When we were going, I asked Julia to go to the bathroom. Of course she said no, and I said yes. We are not stopping in ten minutes because you changed your mind.

She acted very suspicious and passed something to my mother in law, still acting weird. I didn't get it. She darted into the bathroom and slammed the door.

Turns out she'd asked for a GIGANTIC chocolate-chocolate chip muffin to eat in the car and was hiding it from me under her shirt.

I don't care about the muffin, but she could never eat a muffin practically bigger than her own head! Plus we'd just finished eating supper! She wasn't hungry!

My niece and her friends were looking at me strangely, like that Aunt Val gets so crazy. I told them, "This is what she does. She takes huge portions, something of every darn thing there is, and eats maybe TWO BITES and decides she's full. It's so wasting. And she does it constantly, all the time. It drives me crazy." They nodded, not sure what to say.

My mother in law was snickering and said she knew that and didn't care. I looked the other way when Julia came out of the bathroom and pretended not to notice the huge lump in her shirt.

Okay, here comes the best part. As we're leaving, she begins nibbling on the muffin because now she knows I won't try to make her put it back. We were not even a QUARTER MILE down the road--we were still on the dirt road leading out of the woods--and she asked me if I had any kind of container so she could save the rest of the muffin to eat later.

Oh. How did we not know this was how it would go? Oh, it's always the same. Kids are nuts.

Some day she'll grow up, but it won't be today, thank goodness.

This morning in church it was hot as a sauna, but when she held up her hands in that little gesture for me to pick her up? I did. I won't be able to hold her on my hip much longer and not going to pass up any request--that'd be stupid because we cannot go back and do it over.

Anyway, it was a beautiful day, laid back company, nothing but fun. Onward to Monday. love, Val
