grandparents day, 2013

We went. It was beautiful, wonderful, perfect.

First  was a church service, a Catholic mass.   We are not Catholic, but it's still lovely.

Then the kids sang.

This is the kid rolling around on his grandfather.

It's a little aching to be there, at a grandparent occasion, seeing how the kids light up when they find their grandparents, throw themselves into their arms, just like this funny little plaid guy did when he saw us.

It makes me miss my own grandparents, without any clear thoughts, just absorbing the grandparent energy all around.  (The feel of her thin shoulders, his broad chest, the smell of his aftershave, smells of melting butter and summer air)

Whee.   I just hugged and kissed My Sweetie, enjoyed his drawing, which included Jay with exactly one hair on top of his head.

Life does not get any better.
So we attended church at the school, and the kids sang lovely songs, and we ate a fine meal together and then took him to his funny babysitter lady before we headed back to Minneapolis to deal with the afternoon.

Lucky.  That we are.

And this is such a beautiful picture because it is a photo of the LAST child, reading a book, completely unprompted by me. She may be wearing a bathrobe because we're still adjusting to cold air, but she's reading for the fun of it.

I feel a little wistful, and a little relieved.

Diary of  a Wimpy Kid?  Absolutely.     love forever, Grandma, aka Mom, aka Val
